Breathing Supplements and Asthma Medicines: What to Check First

Quick answer

Many people can add a supplement while using an inhaler, but only after asking the doctor who manages their breathing. Asthma controller medicines must be taken every day, even on good days (MedlinePlus, Asthma control drugs). A supplement never replaces them. Breathizen's ginger, bromelain and cordyceps carry interaction cautions with blood thinners, nifedipine, diabetes drugs and immunosuppressants, so bring the ingredient list to your visit.

Short answer

Can you take supplements while on medication for asthma?

Sometimes, but the decision belongs to you and the clinician who knows your lungs. A supplement is an add-on question, never a swap for medicine.

Breathizen's sales page agrees: "Consult a doctor before use if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition, especially if you take medication for asthma, COPD or high blood pressure."

Keep every inhaler and tablet exactly as prescribed. Show the ingredient list to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Asthma basics

Why must asthma controller medicines be taken every day?

Controller medicines calm the airway swelling that sits under asthma, and they only work with steady daily use. MedlinePlus says to take them every day, even when you feel fine (MedlinePlus, Asthma control drugs).

Daily

Long-term controllers

Often an inhaled steroid, sometimes combined with a long-acting reliever. Taken on a schedule to prevent flares, not to stop one in progress (NHLBI, Asthma treatment).

As needed

Quick-relief inhalers

Fast-acting medicines that open the airways during symptoms or an attack. Needing one more often than usual is a sign to call your doctor (NHLBI, Asthma treatment).

The good days are often the controller doing its job.

Action plan

What should your asthma action plan say about supplements?

An asthma action plan is a written sheet from your doctor that says what to take each day and what to do when symptoms change (NHLBI, Asthma treatment). It is the right place to note any supplement you use.

  1. List it

Add the supplement and its ingredients to your medicine list.

  2. Ask once

At your next visit, ask whether anything in it clashes with your medicines or tests.

  3. Follow the zones

Green, yellow and red zone steps stay the same. A supplement does not change them.

COPD

Can you take a breathing supplement if you have COPD?

Ask your lung doctor first. COPD is a long-term lung disease with cough, mucus, shortness of breath and chest tightness, and it affects over 14 million U.S. adults (NHLBI, COPD).

COPD cannot be cured, but treatment and quitting smoking slow it down (NHLBI, COPD). People with COPD often take several medicines, so the chance of an interaction rises. No Breathizen ingredient has been tested in people with COPD.

Interactions

Do supplements interact with medications? The Breathizen checklist

Yes, some do. Three of Breathizen's five ingredients carry known cautions with common prescriptions, listed below from public monographs.

When is breathing trouble an emergency?

Call 911 if breathing trouble starts suddenly or makes it hard to talk (MedlinePlus, Breathing difficulty). Use your quick-relief inhaler and action plan while help comes.

The rules

What can a breathing supplement legally claim?

A supplement may claim to support a normal body function, but not to treat a disease. The FDA does not approve supplements or their claims before they are sold (FDA, Supplement Q&A).

The FTC expects health claims to rest on competent and reliable science, usually human trials. Testimonials and lab studies alone are not enough (FTC, Health claims).

How to read Breathizen's claims

The front label says "Supports Clear Breathing." The sales page goes further, with wording about airway inflammation and mucus that the evidence does not support. Treat those lines as marketing.

The product

Where does Breathizen fit next to your medicines?

At most, beside them. Breathizen is a dietary supplement sold for breathing comfort, taken as 4 pumps once a day. It is not an asthma or COPD medicine.

Its routine is easy, and its five ingredients are named. Their amounts are not published, though, which makes a doctor's review harder. Our who Breathizen is for guide lists who should skip it.

FAQ

Supplements and asthma medicines: common questions

Can you take mullein with prednisone?

None of our sources list a known interaction between mullein and prednisone, but mullein has barely been studied alongside any drug. Prednisone is often given during a flare, which is a time to follow your doctor's plan closely. Ask the prescriber or a pharmacist before adding mullein or a blend that contains it.

Can you take mullein and Mucinex together?

Our sources list no known interaction between mullein and guaifenesin, the main drug in Mucinex. Some Mucinex products also contain other drugs, such as decongestants or cough suppressants, so the answer can change by product. Show both labels to a pharmacist before combining them.

Is mullein good for asthma?

Mullein has not been shown to help asthma. RxList rates its use for asthma as insufficient evidence, and no human trial has tested it in people with asthma. If your asthma is not well controlled, the fix is a review of your action plan with your doctor, not a new herb.

Should I stop my inhaler if I start a supplement?

No. Never stop or cut back an inhaler or controller medicine because you started a supplement. Controller medicines only work when taken every day, even when you feel fine. Any change to your asthma or COPD medicines should come from the clinician who prescribed them.

Do supplements interact with medications?

Yes, some supplements interact with medications. Ginger and bromelain may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners, ginger can affect nifedipine, and cordyceps may add to diabetes drugs or weaken immunosuppressants. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about every supplement you take, including sprays and teas.

Are supplements for asthma and allergies FDA approved?

No. Supplements are not FDA approved before sale, including those sold for asthma and allergies. Makers must have evidence for their claims and follow manufacturing rules, but no agency checks that a product works before it reaches shelves.
